Chinese archaeologists have begun new excavations at the famous terracotta army site in Xian, the capital of Shaanxi Province. The excavations will take a year and one aim is to ascertain the success of conservation measures put in place to protect the unexcavated figures, which are richly coloured when first excavated, but rapidly turn to grey once exposed.
